In 1987 the citizens of Rochester Hills began receiving fulltime fire protection by hiring from the paid on call personnel within the department. The fulltime staff certified and then de-certified a local affiliation with the Firefighters Association of Michigan (FOAM). In 1992, the fire fighters voted to certify a local affiliation, as the Rochester Hills Professional Fire Fighters (RHPFFU), with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). The RHPFFU was chartered by the IAFF on October 21, 1992. The ten charter members worked fulltime as firefighter/dispatchers for the Rochester Hills Fire Department. In 2000, the city increased the fire fighter staffing and removed the fire personnel from dispatch. The department began Advanced Life Support services in 2002. With the growth of the City of Rochester Hills, the local has grown to over thirty (30) members and now consists of three platoons of Firefighter / Paramedics providing fire and emergency medical services 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Staffing also includes the Fire Prevention division with Fire Inspectors conducting fire inspections and other Fire Prevention responsibilities. Also, a Training / Safety Officer and an EMS Coordinator conduct classes and maintain ongoing education for both Fire and EMS operations.
